Signage

We wanted to stress the research attitude in the building by working with folder containers as a signage. In these containers there will be different kinds of information throughout the building.

De Aanschouw / A43
A5 Invite

We designed this invitation for Rotterdam’s smallest gallery.

We opted for placing all information on the reverse side, leaving room for personal input on the face of the invite. A combination of text and imagery determines the face. In each series we use a phrase starting with the Dutch word ‘Aanschouw’, referring to the gallery name, translating roughly into ‘Behold’ with a connotation of the act of viewing as such. We then merge these texts with images.

Hip Hop City

A5 flyer for the Hip Hop City event in Theater Zuidplein, Rotterdam.
There had to be an element in the flyer that is typical for the city Rotterdam. We used the separation of the city by the river ‘Maas’ and translated that into the flyer. We pulled apart the title and rotated one half so the flyer becomes readable from both sides.

Taufiq Hosen
The world outside/inside the Offs

A booklet consisting of two booklets of different sizes. An B5 size put in an A5. The booklet contains work from photographer Taufiq Hosen and are two different series of photographs he wanted to show. One is an autonomous serie about the moment that is not capture-able and the other one is a commercial serie for a fake brand called ‘the offs’.

We decided to create a booklet out of posters so in total we used 4 posters with a special folding technique.

We like the way a product looks simple but the construction of the product (the invisible, sometimes a grid and in this case the way it is folded) is way more complex then it appears.

For the introduction of the new website of Ruben Dario Kleimeer, we designed an A5 card.
This type of printing we find it the most fun to make, somehow on these moments the printed matter wins it from the virtual world.

The Diversity Code

An A5 invite for a four-part series of debates on cultural diversity titled ‘The Diversity Code’ held by RRKC in De Unie, Rotterdam. For part one, we used material from the film ‘Planet of the Apes’ (1968); a shot taken behind the scenes depicting Charlton Heston sitting alongside Zira.

Part two features stills taken from ‘Coming to America’ (1988). The flyer face shows Prince Akeem having just arrived, and overleaf there’s an image of him professing to be the cliché New Yorker.

Popular Populism
Confetti, RRKC

An invitation to the ‘Popular Populism’ debating night in the form of a poster.
Debate focuses on the consequences Populism may entail for our society.

The text ‘Voor Achter Links Rechts’ (‘Front Rear Left Right’) is derived from a Dutch nursery rhyme titled ‘A Dutch American’, which sings of the pompous appearance of an American.
Left and Right simultaneously refer to the range of options available in Dutch politics.

The People united will never be Defeated
TENT.Rotterdam

We were invited to provide printed matter for the politically slanted exhibition ‘The people united will never be defeated’. Our initial proposal concerned use of characteristics taken from the flag of Chile, as the title of the exhibition was derived from a Chilean freedom song. This was decided to be too dominant, however.

The star displayed is a ‘remnant’ of our proposal. La estrella solitaria (‘The lone star’) is the name of the star incorporated in the Chilean flag.

Before we had the opportunity to present a second proposal, however, we were required to submit our design of an advertisement, the layout of which we decided to extend into our further expressions. This resulted in a final product that arose through time pressure and huge concessions, leading to an upshot that was unsatisfactory as a product.
The result was not what we had hoped but is mainly due to our choices and not the smooth cooperation with TENT.

Jan Cunen Museum, Oss (NL)

We were invited to provide the printed matter for ‘Wolken Deken’, an exhibition by Jan de Reus in the Jan Cunen Museum in Oss. Two hand-outs were required; one directed at visitors and another for educational purposes. We applied imagery of sculptures by Paul de Reus, using a single detail of a particular piece and supplementing it with the title of the exhibition and the name of the artist. The back features the information in a colour derived from the drawing Paul de Reus made for the invitations.

In addition to these two hand-outs, we designed a set of two posters, three postcards, badges, stickers, a banner, and a billboard. The method we used for arriving at these various expressions was the same as that applied to the hand-outs; combining text and photos, occasionally involving specific photographic details or a cut-out image.

The Hand-out is A5 full color on Munken Print.

De Unie / Confetti
January 26th, 2010

Salon Indien/Confetti

During the International Film Festival Rotterdam, a series of lectures were held in De Unie, for which we designed an A5 paper size invitation. In the process, we used an image depicting a derailed train having crashed right through the walls of an elevated railway station, dating from the year in which the Lumière brothers presented their first film screening in Salon Indien. One of the short films first screened by the two brothers features a train arriving at a station. In those days, many among the audience experienced this as if the train was heading straight for them, making the event quite a frightening sensation. The derailed train photograph constitutes an interpretation of the spectator’s imagination at the time.

In their A4 invitation for the Confetti debating night, De Unie playfully hint at the 2009 Youth Year that took place under the name ‘YourWorld’, by organising debates titled ‘Your debate’ and ‘Your competition’. These debates review the past Youth Year, accompanied by a column writing competition encouraging young people to publish their opinions on the year gone by. We decided to add emphasis to these hints by prominently placing the phrase ‘Your time to shine’ on the face of our design, supported by a zodiac sign in the background.

The entire YourWorld campaign was interlaced with the notion of YOU – giving a sense of direct appeal to personal responsibility. (This sense was reinforced by the YourWorld logo, in which You was given a slightly lighter shade, suggesting that the logo read You R World). Such direct appeals may give viewers a sense of stardom, though the prospect of being a new star is as insincere as the platitudinous Luther Vandross song ‘Shine’:

“Tonight you’re gonna get your time to shine
Nobody but stars in here tonight”

The Salon Indien flyer is A5.
The Confetti flyer is A4.
